House of the Rising Son :: New Orleans, LA | loving Jesus and loving others through intentional community

nicole (gordy) mayeux

Who I am:

Name’s Nikki. I’m a 23-year-old New Orleans native. I’ve been a “cultural Christian” my whole life, but I point to fall 2005 as the time when I made the conscious choice to follow after my Savior and Beloved (surprisingly, it had a lot less to do with Hurricane Katrina than you might think =P). Between then and now, I’ve been greatly involved with Chi Alpha Campus Ministry as a student leader and then as a part-time intern after I graduated. It was during the Chi Alpha World Missions Summit of 2005 that God first placed the issue of homelessness, the poor, and intentional community on my heart. At the same conference three years later, after much wrestling and prayer, God told me it was time to move forward with the vision of a Christian community house in the Quarter that I had been dreaming about. I committed myself to doing it, posted a blog, and the rest is still-being-written history.

(showin' off the awesome set of dreads Brent gave me!)

What I do:

Resident arts-n-crafter, photo-documenter, writer, random household items organizier, 9-5 barista, and cookie baker. I'm slowly but surely learning bike repair to be able to better help with the bike ministry we have already started, and I'll be helping out in the community garden this summer. As we grow, I'd love to lead a women's bible study and/or be a mentor or tutor at one of the nearby public schools. Oh yeah, and in April I married Marc. =)
